How to Screenshot on Lenovo Laptop & ThinkPad (Complete Guide)
Take screenshots on any Lenovo laptop — ThinkPad, IdeaPad, Yoga, Legion. Fix ThinkPad PrtSc placement, Hotkey Mode, and tablet mode captures.
How to Screenshot on Lenovo Laptop & ThinkPad (Complete Guide)
Lenovo's product lines have distinct keyboard layouts, and the Print Screen key isn't in the same place across them. On ThinkPads, PrtSc sits in the bottom row between Alt and Ctrl — a placement that surprises anyone coming from another brand. On IdeaPads and Yogas, PrtSc is in the top row but requires Fn by default because Hotkey Mode prioritizes media functions.
This guide covers every Lenovo screen capture method across ThinkPad, IdeaPad, Yoga, and Legion, with fixes for the keyboard issues Lenovo users actually encounter.
Quick Reference: Lenovo Screenshot Shortcuts
| Shortcut | What It Does | Where It Saves |
|---|---|---|
| PrtSc | Copies full screen to clipboard | Clipboard (paste to save) |
| Alt + PrtSc | Copies active window to clipboard | Clipboard (paste to save) |
| Win + PrtSc | Captures full screen as file | Pictures > Screenshots |
| Win + Shift + S | Opens Snipping Tool overlay | Clipboard + notification |
| Win + Alt + PrtSc | Captures active window via Game Bar | Videos > Captures |
| Fn + PrtSc | PrtSc on models with Hotkey Mode enabled | Same as PrtSc |
| Win + Vol Down | Screenshot in tablet mode (Yoga) | Pictures > Screenshots |
Method 1: Win + Shift + S (Works on Every Lenovo)
This shortcut opens the Snipping Tool overlay and works on every Lenovo model regardless of keyboard layout or Hotkey Mode:
- Press Win + Shift + S
- The screen dims and a selection toolbar appears
- Choose rectangular, freeform, window, or fullscreen capture
- Select your area — the screenshot copies to clipboard
- Click the notification to annotate and save
This is the most reliable method because it doesn't depend on the PrtSc key at all.
Method 2: Print Screen Key
Where Is PrtSc on Lenovo Keyboards?
ThinkPad (T-series, X-series, P-series, X1 Carbon Gen 3+): PrtSc is in the bottom row, between the right Alt key and right Ctrl key. This is where most other laptops put the context menu (right-click) key — Lenovo removed that key to make room for PrtSc. It's a standalone key in the bottom row that typically works without Fn, since it's not part of the function key row.
ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 2 (2014): This model had an "adaptive keyboard" that replaced the physical function row with a touch-sensitive strip. There is no PrtSc key. Screenshot requires Fn + T. This design was abandoned after one generation.
IdeaPad: PrtSc is in the top row, near F12 and the Insert/Delete area. IdeaPad models default to Hotkey Mode enabled, which means the top row sends media functions by default. You need Fn + PrtSc to activate Print Screen unless you toggle FnLock.
Yoga: Same as IdeaPad — PrtSc in the top row, Hotkey Mode enabled by default. Press Fn + PrtSc or toggle FnLock with Fn + Esc.
Legion / LOQ: PrtSc is in the top row, similar to IdeaPad. Hotkey Mode is enabled by default. Press Fn + PrtSc or toggle FnLock.
Print Screen Shortcuts
Once you know where PrtSc is:
- PrtSc — copies full screen to clipboard
- Alt + PrtSc — copies active window only
- Win + PrtSc — captures full screen and saves to
C:\Users\YourName\Pictures\Screenshots
Fixing PrtSc Issues on Lenovo
Problem: PrtSc Does Nothing
On ThinkPad: Check the bottom row of the keyboard, not the top. The PrtSc key is between right Alt and right Ctrl. Most ThinkPad users who think PrtSc is broken are simply looking in the wrong place.
On IdeaPad / Yoga / Legion: Press Fn + PrtSc instead. These models have Hotkey Mode enabled by default.
Problem: Hotkey Mode Confusion
Hotkey Mode controls whether the top row keys default to their media function (brightness, volume) or their F-key function. This directly affects PrtSc on models where it's in the top row.
Toggle FnLock: Press Fn + Esc. An LED indicator on the Esc or Fn key shows the current state. When FnLock is on, function keys send F1-F12 by default, and PrtSc works without Fn.
Change in Lenovo Vantage:
- Open Lenovo Vantage
- Go to Device > Input & Accessories (or Keyboard & Mouse)
- Find Top Row Key Function
- Switch to "F1-F12" to make function keys the default
Change in BIOS:
- Restart and press F1 (ThinkPad) or F2 (IdeaPad/Yoga/Legion) to enter BIOS
- Navigate to Configuration
- Find Hotkey Mode and toggle it
- Save and exit
Problem: PrtSc Opens Snipping Tool Instead of Copying
On Windows 11, PrtSc opens Snipping Tool by default. To restore the old behavior: Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Keyboard and toggle off "Use the Print Screen key to open screen capture."
Problem: OneDrive or Dropbox Intercepting Screenshots
If PrtSc seems to work but nothing appears in your clipboard, check whether OneDrive or Dropbox is saving screenshots to their own folders. Look in OneDrive > Pictures > Screenshots or check the app's settings.
Method 3: Snipping Tool
Works identically on every Lenovo model:
- Press Win + Shift + S for the quick overlay, or search "Snipping Tool" in the Start menu
- Choose a capture mode — rectangular, freeform, window, or fullscreen
- Optional: set a delay timer (3, 5, or 10 seconds)
- Capture, annotate, and save
The Snipping Tool also supports screen recording on Windows 11. See our complete Snipping Tool guide for all features.
Method 4: Xbox Game Bar
- Press Win + G to open Game Bar
- Click the camera icon or press Win + Alt + PrtSc
- Screenshots save to
C:\Users\YourName\Videos\Captures
For recording: Win + Alt + R to start and stop. Game Bar works for app windows but can't capture the desktop or File Explorer.
Method 5: Lenovo Yoga Tablet Mode
When using a Yoga 2-in-1 in tablet mode (keyboard folded back or detached):
- Press Windows button + Volume Down simultaneously
- The screen dims to confirm the capture
- Screenshot saves to Pictures > Screenshots
Snipping Tool also works via the Start menu touchscreen.
ThinkPad-Specific Tips
Fn and Ctrl Key Swap
ThinkPads have a unique quirk: the Fn key is in the bottom-left corner where most keyboards put Ctrl. This can cause issues if you're pressing the wrong key for shortcuts like Ctrl + V (paste).
You can swap Fn and Ctrl in two ways:
- Lenovo Vantage: Device > Input & Accessories > Fn and Ctrl Key Swap
- BIOS: Configuration > Keyboard/Mouse > Fn and Ctrl Key Swap
This doesn't affect PrtSc behavior but makes the overall keyboard experience more familiar.
ThinkPad Keyboard Layout History
If you have an older ThinkPad, the PrtSc location may differ:
- Pre-2012 (T420, X220, and earlier): Classic 7-row keyboard with PrtSc in a traditional position
- 2012+ (T430, X230, and later): Redesigned 6-row chiclet keyboard moved PrtSc to the bottom row
- X1 Carbon Gen 2 (2014): Adaptive keyboard with no PrtSc — use Fn + T
- X1 Carbon Gen 3+ (2015 onward): PrtSc back in the bottom row
Screen Recording on Lenovo
Xbox Game Bar — press Win + Alt + R to record. Saves to Videos > Captures.
Snipping Tool (Windows 11) — open the app and select Record.
Legion note: The older Lenovo Nerve Center software (shipped with Legion Y520/Y720) included a screen recorder, but it was discontinued in 2020 and replaced by Lenovo Vantage. For game recording on Legion, use Windows Game Bar or NVIDIA GeForce Experience.
For more recording tools, see our screen recording software guide.
Beyond Basic Screenshots
For polished screenshots with backgrounds, device mockups, or animation, Captio is a browser extension with a full compositor — gradient backgrounds, 3D transforms, device frames (iPhone, iPad, MacBook), and video export. There's also a free online screenshot beautifier for quick styling without installing anything.

Lenovo Screenshot FAQ
Where is the Print Screen key on a ThinkPad?
On most modern ThinkPads, PrtSc is in the bottom row between right Alt and right Ctrl. It's a standalone key that doesn't need Fn. The X1 Carbon Gen 2 (2014) was the only model without a PrtSc key — use Fn + T on that specific model.
Why is my Print Screen not working on a Lenovo laptop?
On IdeaPad, Yoga, and Legion, Hotkey Mode is enabled by default — press Fn + PrtSc. Or toggle FnLock with Fn + Esc. On ThinkPads, check the bottom row instead of the top row.
How do I take a screenshot on a Lenovo Yoga in tablet mode?
Press Windows button + Volume Down simultaneously. The screenshot saves to Pictures > Screenshots.
What is the difference between ThinkPad and IdeaPad keyboard layouts?
ThinkPad puts PrtSc in the bottom row as a standalone key — not affected by Hotkey Mode. IdeaPad puts PrtSc in the top row and defaults to Hotkey Mode (media functions first), requiring Fn + PrtSc.
How do I change function key behavior?
Press Fn + Esc to toggle FnLock. Or open Lenovo Vantage > Device > Input & Accessories > Top Row Key Function. Or change Hotkey Mode in BIOS (F1/F2 at boot > Configuration).
Does the Lenovo Legion have screenshot features?
No proprietary screenshot tools. The old Nerve Center (pre-2020) had a recorder, but it's discontinued. Use Windows Game Bar (Win + G) or NVIDIA GeForce Experience for game captures.
